âOf course.â Brenda sounded confused. âWhat else?â
The Doctor shook his head in irritation. âSometimes I forget what century Iâm in,â he said. âCan you show me where it happened?â
Brenda tapped the map. âOff the Western Rim Islands,â she said.
The Doctor whipped the data-pad from his pocket and scrutinised the screen.
âThis is bad,â he said. âVery bad. What defences do you have here, Miss Mulholland?â
âWe have an automated defence network. Not very powerful. We donât really need it, but itâs a standard precaution. Itâs never been used...â
âAnything else?â
âOnly the police. Forty or so. Half a dozen vehicles, one remaining sub. Hand weapons...â
âYou must have storm shutters,â the Doctor said, âfrom what Iâve heard about the weather on Coralee.â
âThey were Garrettâs greatest achievement,â Brenda said.
âRaise them,â the Doctor snapped. âGet everybody off the streets.
We have to seal this place.â
âWhatâs happening, Doctor?â She lit a cigarette.
The Doctor thrust the pad under her nose.
âThis is a map of sorts,â he said. âI believe it shows the nesting grounds of the Krill. And look here.â
âThatâs exactly where the sub blew up,â Brenda said. âWhat does that mean?â
âI talked to Edwin Bryce earlier today,â said the Doctor. âHeâs studied the Krill legends. One of the things he told me was that they thrive on radiation.â
He paused, scrutinising Brenda. She looked impatient.
âThink of a seed, Miss Mulholland. Lying dormant, waiting for that first drop of moisture, that first drop of nourishment that will cause it to shoot, cause it to crack open and begin to grow.â
âWhat are you saying, Doctor?â
âThe Krill were an unstoppable and almost uncontrollable weapon.
The people who created them probably kept them dormant until they were needed, then fired the eggs into their enemyâs territory and followed up with a nuclear bombardment. I believe the Krill are born out of nuclear fusion.â
âOh God...â
âYou remember the cable-laying platform â the Hyperion Dawn?
When I examined it I found a radioactive element attached to its hull.
Now this. Someoneâs deliberately trying to revive the Krill, Miss 102
